Changing the oil in your Husqvarna lawn mower is one of the most effective ways to ensure a long service life and optimal performance. Fresh oil lubricates the engine components, reduces friction, and dissipates heat, preventing the buildup of harmful sludge. Regular maintenance, performed at the recommended intervals, keeps your machine running smoothly whether you are trimming a small residential yard or managing a larger property.
Preparation and Safety Precautions
Before you begin any maintenance task, safety must be the top priority. Always start by disconnecting the spark plug lead to prevent the engine from accidentally starting while you are working. Engage the parking brake if your model is equipped with one, and ensure the machine is placed on a stable, level surface. Gather your tools and materials beforehand, which typically include a new oil filter, the correct type of engine oil specified in your user manual, a wrench, an oil filter wrench, a drain pan, and disposable gloves.
Draining the Old Oil
Locate the oil drain plug at the bottom of the engine. Position your drain pan directly beneath the plug to catch the used oil. Using the appropriate wrench, carefully loosen the drain plug by turning it counterclockwise. Once loose, remove the plug by hand, allowing the oil to drain completely. It is important to let the oil flow out fully to remove contaminants that have settled at the bottom of the sump. After the draining is complete, securely tighten the plug back into place, taking care not to overtighten it.
Removing and Replacing the Oil Filter
The oil filter plays a critical role in trapping debris and ensuring the cleanliness of the lubrication system. Locate the filter, which is usually positioned near the engine block. Use an oil filter wrench to loosen the filter carefully, as it will contain residual oil. Before installing the new filter, apply a small amount of fresh oil to the gasket on the top of the filter. This ensures a proper seal and prevents dry starts. Screw the new filter onto the engine by hand, tightening it securely—usually about three-quarters of a turn past hand tight—without using the wrench.
Pouring New Oil
With the drain plug tightened and the new filter in place, you are ready to add fresh oil. Locate the oil fill cap on top of the engine and remove it. Consult your Husqvarna owner’s manual to confirm the correct oil grade and capacity for your specific model. Pour the recommended amount of oil slowly into the fill port. Avoid overfilling, as this can cause increased pressure and reduce engine efficiency. Replace the fill cap once you have reached the proper level.
Checking the Oil Level
After adding oil, it is essential to verify the level using the dipstick. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes, then turn it off and wait a moment for the oil to settle back into the crankcase. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, and then remove it again to check the marker. The oil should be between the "Min" and "Max" indicators. If the level is low, add a small amount of oil incrementally and recheck until it reaches the correct range.
Proper Disposal and Cleanup
Handling used oil requires care due to its hazardous nature. Never pour old oil down drains or onto the ground, as it can contaminate soil and water sources. Transfer the drained oil from the pan into a sealed, leak-proof container with a tight-fitting lid. Most automotive parts stores and recycling centers accept used oil for free. Clean any spills immediately using rags or absorbent materials, and dispose of contaminated materials according to local regulations.
